Associate Medical Director

Job Overview

The associate medical director provides medical clinical leadership for Prototypes, across all residential and outpatient services providing mental health and substance use services. The associate medical director is responsible for clinical oversight, working closely with clinical leadership to ensure the quality of care and service provided to Prototypes clients including pregnant and parenting women.  In addition, the associate medical director acts as attending physician, providing direct patient care, including mental health assessment, medication assessment, including medication for the treatment of substance use disorder.  At the organizational level, the medical director participates in clinical and management leadership venues. Supervises the Nursing Director and other psychiatric technicians. Provides clinical supervision for   psychiatrists and I or psychiatric nurse practitioners.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership Responsibilities

  • In conjunction with HR360 executive leadership, develops, implements, and oversees clinic site budgets.
  • Develops and implements policies pertaining to the Medical Department. 
  • Provides medical supervision and oversight of quality of care among providers and ancillary staff in clinical areas.
  • Promotes and enhances integrated team based care, with a focus on patient centered care.
  • Ensures that in the absence of the primary provider, that a mechanism is established so that a provider is available to review lab and diagnostic reports, prescriptions, and follow up on care.
  • Provides leadership and support in starting new service lines and programs within clinic sites as well as across the organization, including other clinic sites, behavioral health, and re-entry services.
  • Promotes social justice for and addresses health disparities of communities served.
  • Fosters a culture of cultural humility and competence in serving target communities.
  • Foster a culture of quality and excellence in the clinical care provided.

Clinical Services:

  • Provides mental health and addiction treatment evaluation and care for clients.
  • Assesses, prescribes, and monitors clients for psychiatric diagnosis and treatment.
  • Assesses and manages medication assisted treatment needs for clients in outpatient and residential substance use treatment and detoxification.
  • Provides psychiatric consultations and collaboration with Prototypes personnel. Is available to staff for consultation on urgent or emergent issues
  • Conducts meetings with treatment team.
  • Maintains up-to-date files and documentation on psychiatric medications.
  • Provides on-call coverage.
  • Participates in treatment and discharge planning for clients
  • Acts as attending physician, providing direct client care
  • Participates in concurrent reviews and appeals as needed for client treatment authorization.
  • Supervises medical providers and staff.

Quality Management:

  • Participates in and leads Peer Reviews to improve quality of clinical services
  • Provides clinical leadership to the organization in collaboration with senior and program leadership.
  • Monitors the performance of the organization's medical services and works with the senior and program leadership to improve the quality and efficiency of care and service provided to clients.
  • Provides training and consultation to treatment staff.
  • Participates in development and periodic review of relevant policies and procedures
  • Champions quality improvement efforts and provides clinical expertise.

People Management:

  • Supervises nursing staff, or licensed psychiatric technicians and provides clinical supervision of psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners.
  • Responsible for all performance management including, performance improvement plans, formal written warning notices and terminations of all direct reports as needed.

Education and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


    • A valid and unrestricted California Physician's License (MD or DO) with a specialty in psychiatry and I or addiction medicine;
    • Board certification in Psychiatry and/or Addiction Medicine.
    • Valid DEA certificate with Data 2000 (X) Waiver
  • If does not have Data 2000 waiver at time of hire must obtain within 4 months.


  • Board certification in Addiction Medicine.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Required:
  • Experience serving adults with chronic medical conditions and co-occurring severe mental illness and substance use disorders.
  • A minimum 5 years post-licensure experience in direct patient care in intensive psychiatric and/or substance use treatment settings
  • A minimum 2 years’ experience as medical director to a psychiatric or substance use treatment program


  • Bi-lingual in Spanish.
  • Experience working with underserved communities, including African American, Latinx, Asian Pacific Islander.
  • Experience working with women suffering from substance use disorder or with a criminal justice history and their children.
  • Proven organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge and respect of all confidentiality issues.
  • Knowledge of and experience with providing culturally competent and trauma informed
