Job Overview

Lee Woodward Counseling Center for Women (LWCC) is an outpatient program that provides integrated substance use and mental health services for women who reside in San Francisco. Our counseling approach is trauma-informed, harm reduction and strengths-based. Services include individual, group and case management services as well as yoga, parenting support and child care. Our goals are to provide a safe and respectful counseling space for women from all walks of life and to reduce the impact of substance use and mental health conditions that lead to healthy, meaningful lives.

The Clinical Team Leader/Therapist at LWCC works collaboratively with a team consisting of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselors to provide clinical direction and oversight of Drug Medi-Cal (DMC) services. Under the DMC model, they are qualified to establish medical necessity, diagnosis and approve SUD treatment plans. The Clinical Team Leader/Therapist also maintains a caseload of clients seeking substance use and mental health treatment. This position conducts assessments, individual, group counseling sessions, progress reviews with each client, crisis management and discharge planning. The Clinical Team Lead/Therapist acts as a liaison between the agency and outside organizations, collaborating with program staff to link clients with appropriate resources in the community (e.g. vocational, housing, and medical services).

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Team Leader responsibilities: Schedules weekly team meetings and creates the agenda in coordination with the administrative assistant, ensuring timely response to required compliance/documentation issues, ensuring completion of all action/follow-up items and provides overall clinical consultation. Ensures clients are assessed to the appropriate level of care and provides diagnostic feedback and assessment information to facilitate any changes (step up or step down services) to support client’s treatment goals. Reviews and signs treatment plans and medical necessity forms, adhering to strict Drug Medi-Cal timelines. Coordinates curriculum development and facilitates training as needed.

Clinical Responsibilities: Provides mental health assessments and evaluations, integrated alcohol and drug counseling, which includes individual therapy and support. Provides culturally competent services using harm reduction and trauma informed principles. Identifies treatment needs, recommends treatment plans based on assessment, and works to ensure clients are able meet all requirements. Serves as the point of contact and coordinates referrals and follow-ups with other agencies. Handles crisis interventions and assesses situations for further needs. Maintains a caseload of clients providing substance use and mental health treatment. Maintains a productivity target of 24 hours of billable services per week.

Administration and compliance: Monitors reports daily to prevent and clear any compliance errors in client charts. Maintains client charts in accordance with governing standards and regulations (Drug Medi-Cal). Maintain records and documents services in a timely manner. Maintains strict confidentiality guidelines regarding all clients, conversations and referrals. Complies with Board requirements for license registration/renewal.

Treatment Setting Responsibilities: Facilitates groups using evidence-based strategies on a variety of core curriculum such as CBT, Seeking Safety, DBT and Relapse Prevention. Coordinates discharge planning with client’s SUD Counselor. Provides consultation to staff regarding symptom management, mental health conditions and crisis intervention strategies. Attends staff and agency meetings. Participates in agency trainings as required.

Documentation Responsibilities: Conducts assessments, develops treatment plans, completes release and consent forms and discharge paperwork in a timely manner. In addition, completes assigned Drug Medi-Cal, Mental Health documentation and billing. Documents all delivered individual and group services in various electronic systems in accordance with guidelines established by HealthRIGHT 360 to satisfy internal and external evaluating requirements.

Education and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Education and Experience


-Registered with Board of Behavioral Sciences (AMFT, ASW, APCC) or Board of Psychology (Registered Psychologist)

-Minimum two years of experience in a substance abuse treatment or community mental health setting.

-First Aid certified within 30 days of employment

-CPR certified within 30 days of employment

-A valid California driver’s license

-Culturally competent and able to work with a diverse population

-Experience with mental health assessment and diagnosis

-Knowledge of co-occurring disorders and trauma informed treatment

-Experience providing individual and group counseling

-Experience with harm reduction and evidenced-based practices (e.g. CBT, Seeking Safety, DBT, MI)

-Knowledge of clinical documentation (treatment plans, progress notes etc.)

-Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word, Outlook and internet applications


-Licensed with Board of Behavioral Sciences (MFT, LCSW, LPCC) or Board of Psychology (Psychologist)

-Experience with Drug Medi-Cal requirements and billing

-Experience working with criminal justice population

Compensation: $65,000.00-$75,000.00
