Job Overview

North County Serenity House, A Program of HealthRIGHT 360 was founded in 1966 to provide substance use disorder services in the community. North County Serenity House provides a gender-responsive and trauma-informed environment, using evidence-based and best practices that recognize and account for the role that trauma frequently plays in substance use and criminal histories of women. For clients with co-occurring mental illness, we provide integrated substance use and mental health services which treat both conditions as primary. Our residential facility serves up to 120 women (with capacity for up to 20 children under 5 years of age) seeking recovery from substance use disorders.

The Medical (Med) Technician (Tech) is either a certified or registered medical assistant who maintains registration from an approved/accredited California agency, or registered substance use disorder professional who maintains registration from an approved/accredited California agency. The Med Tech provides supervision and oversite oof the medroom in a residential substance use disorder program and is responsible for monitoring self adminstration of medications during assigned times throughout shift.

Key Responsibilities

Direct Service Responsibility:

  • Maintains a high degree of self-awareness and the ability to stay calm under pressure.
  • Assists with assessment and intake of clients entering the detox unit.
  • Demonstrates strong crisis intervention and client stabilization skills.
  • Complete detox rounds and behavioral support rounds at 30 minute intervals and documents each round accurately.
  • Monitors client progress in detox and maintains strong communication with the medical team.
  • Provides medical crisis intervention and triages clients as needed within scope of practice.
  • Monitors the medication line and observes client medication self- administration.
  • Documents client medication self-administration with accuracy.
  • Works collaboratively with other members of the treatment team and communicates any behavioral concerns to the client’s Case Manager, Clinical Therapist, Counselor, Medical, and Psychiatrist.
  • Seeks consultation when encountering new and/or high risk medical or clinical circumstance.

Clinical Documentation Responsibility:

  • Write and complete all progress notes within 72 hours of service delivery.
  • Maintains compliance with due dates for all clinical documentation.
  • Responsible for completing detox paperwork.
  • Documentation must maintain in compliance with agency policy and procedures, HIPAA, 42-CFR, VCBH, and Drug MediCal standards.
  • Documents all client UA’s using the UA form and a progress note.
  • Completes same day incident reports.
  • Documents detox rounds and behavioral support rounds every 30 minutes.
  • Files the documentation of the rounds in accordance with agency policy.

Training, Supervision, and Quality Improvement Responsibility:

  • Maintains full compliance with Medical Assistant requirements for registration and certification.
  • Actively participates in agency and team meetings.
  • Participates in training opportunities.
  • Communicates collaboratively with all members of the behavioral health team including: medical, mental health, psychiatry, substance use disorder, and other staff.
  • Completes all assigned trainings and Relias trainings in a timely manner.

Professionalism and Other Duties: 

  • Arrange work schedule in accordance with the agencys needs.
  • Responds to Lead Med Techs coordination of facility needs.
  • Attend regular staff meetings and other meetings as assigned.
  • Reads emails daily and responds when appropriate.
  • Transports clients as needed.
  • Conducts random and planned room searches primarily in the detox and behavioral health units.
  • Completes random and scheduled client UA tests and documents test results.
  • And, other duties as assigned.

Education and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Education Requirements:

  • Registration or Certification as Medical Assistant from an approved/accredited California agency, or Registration as Substance Abuse Counselor from an approved/accredited California agency.


  • Preferably a minimum of two years experience in the human service field and demonstrated expertise in substance abuse treatment, relapse prevention, and recovery.
  • Experience working with clients experiencing acute withdrawal from substances Knowledge of and experience with providing trauma informed services.

Flexibility in working evenings, weekends, holidays based on program needs.

In compliance with the California Department of Public Health's mandate, all employees must be able to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Medical and religious exemptions are available.

Compensation: $18.00-$19.00
