Job Overview

The Overnight Therapist is responsible for assessing client needs and strengths in support of health and recovery. Through a gender responsive, trauma informed approach, the Overnight Therapist provides individual therapy and crisis support in accordance with program specific requirements under the supervision of a licensed clinical professional. Additionally, the Overnight Therapist provides individual care coordination and referrals to assist clients in navigating systems of care while providing a supportive treatment environment. Overnight Therapists will also relay relevant information to other members of the interdisciplinary team and performs crisis interventions as needed.

Key Responsibilities

Overnight Therapists remains alert and awake during the entire overnight shift. Performs house rounds to ensure and maintain accountability of all clients and the safety and security of the facility. Documents client updates and incidents in the facility log daily. Performs CPR and First Aid as needed. May work weekends and holidays as needed.

The responsibilities of the Overnight Therapist would be to assess, monitor and support clients who are in need. They would conduct intake mental health assessments, complete referral forms, schedule intakes, develop treatment plans, and provide individual sessions for those who are on an unconventional sleeping pattern or whose behavioral health symptoms may affect their sleep, and be able to assist with crisis situations as they arise. The therapist would write 5150’s if needed and be able to support clients in getting to the hospital if it is safe to do so, lessening the need to involve law enforcement. Some administrative duties overnight therapists would support in would be to gather resources for individual clients and begin developing transition plans. Overnight Therapists would continually assess suicidality, psychosis, and other mental health behaviors that may require more attention.

Regarding the phone referral form, overnight therapists would complete this with the referral source, as well as assess whether that person meets criteria to be admitted to Serenity House.


Individual Treatment Responsibilities: Facilitates individual counseling sessions with each caseload client; Provides clinical support to assist clients in meeting their treatment goals and during crisis. Proactively links clients to both internal and external resources based on their treatment needs and follows up on the progress/status; Conducts appropriate mental health assessments and completing treatment plans.


Treatment Setting Responsibilities: Facilitates group counseling sessions and community meetings and provides psycho-educational groups on various treatment related topics. Performs crisis interventions and communicates/coordinates with the treatment team as unforeseen situations arise.   As needed, accompanies clients to offsite appointments related to their treatment. Attends required trainings and meetings.


Documentation Responsibilities: Documents/ logs clients belongings, ensures client medications are securely stored and properly accounted for; Will notify and coordinate with on-call staff in the event of an emergency; Ensures all potential hazardous items are secured. Appropriately files any outstanding paperwork. Maintains log of activities done; attends required trainings and meetings

Collaborates with each caseload client and other available internal and external resources to develop/maintain treatment plans, transition plans, progress notes and appropriate updates in support of the health and recovery needs of the client. Properly documents all individual counseling sessions and completes the discharge paperwork/process and required agency assessments in timely manner. Also, maintains accurate records by data entering documentation into various electronic systems for all caseload clients in accordance with guidelines established by HealthRIGHT 360 to satisfy internal and external evaluating requirements. Develops treatment plans, completes release and consent forms, etc. In addition, completes Medicare and Medi-Cal documentation and billing as needed.


Education and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Education and Experience


-Master’s Degree in related field (Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, etc.)

-Active registration with the BBS (Board of Behavioral Sciences) or Licensed Clinician

-Experience working with people in extreme states; or person’s experiencing psychosis, or suicidality, or other forms of profound distress

-First Aid Certified within 30 days of employment

-CPR Certified within 30 days of employment


Desired (any of the following):

-Direct experience working with high-intensity environments

-Lived experience of either being diagnosed, or systematized, or hospitalized

-Training in deeper listening skills, such as reflective listening and Motivational Interviewing

-Demonstrable ability to convey accurate empathy


Background Clearance


-Must pass a fingerprint background check with the Department of Justice and FBI

-Must not be on active parole or probation, clear with OIG database




-Culturally competent and able to work with a diverse population

-Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word Outlook and internet applications

-Experience working successfully with issues of substance abuse, mental health, criminal background, and other potential barriers to economic self sufficiency



-Knowledge of DBT, CBT, MI and trauma based treatment highly desirable

-Experience navigating 5150 or emergency/crisis procedures

-Knowledge of trauma, co-occurring disorders and trauma-informed treatment

-Knowledge of Clinical documentation (treatment plans, progress notes etc.)

-Experience working with criminal justice population

-Experience working with crisis prevention and de-escalation techniques


Compensation: $65,000.00-$70,000.00
