Residential Program Director - 815 Buena Vista

Job Overview

We’re looking for someone who is excited to lead our team of passionate service providers in providing a safe and supportive recovery environment for some of the most vulnerable members of our community. The person is this role will have the opportunity to set the clinical tone of our co-occurring residential behavioral health treatment program in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco.  

This is a very special program that has been operating for over 40 years in a historic building and location. The program participants are very diverse people who experience symptoms of severe substance use and mental health conditions. The program is staffed by a multidisciplinary team that utilizes trauma-informed, gender responsive, LGBTQ+ attuned, evidence-based, and harm reduction (with a focus on abstinence) approaches to treatment. The Director of Residential Behavioral Health Services is responsible for overseeing and implementing residential behavioral health program services, clinical activities, and staffing to ensure program compliance with contracts and licensing regulations for the Residential and Withdrawal Management Programs at 815 Buena Vista West Dual Diagnosis program.  The Program Director sets the clinical tone, utilizing trauma-informed, gender-responsive, evidence-based, and harm reduction approaches. Coordinates with other departments within and outside of the agency to ensure that client needs are being met in support of health and recovery. 

Key Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:  

  • Oversees program services and activities while ensuring compliance with contracts and licensing which includes meeting Drug MediCal ODS standards. 
  • Oversees management of staff and agency volunteers, which includes registered and certified AOD counselors and master's-level mental health clinicians. 
  • Ensures all staff are trained on and competent with program policies, procedures, and practices. 
  • Develops and maintains strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Coordinates with other departments within and outside of the agency to ensure that client needs are being met in support of health and recovery. 
  • Responsible for the oversight of the program needs, including safety, security, compliance, and accountability. 
  • Responsible for assuring program census and service delivery are maximized to facilitate program’s financial viability.  
  • Responsible for meeting program quality assurance standards including documentation requirements, client experience, outcomes, and productivity. 
  • Must be available afterhours and on weekends to respond to facility emergencies and outstanding crisis or events. 

Education and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Education and Experience Required: 

  • BA in Psychology/Social Work or related field with Registration/License with BBS or BOP, plus 2 years management experience and 3 years’ experience working in a residential setting.  


  • Substance Abuse Certification or Registration recognized by ADP and High School diploma or equivalent, 2 years’ management experience and 3 years’ experience working in a residential setting. 

Background Clearance:

  • Must not be on active parole or probation 

Knowledge Required: 

  • Culturally competent and able to work with a diverse population. 
  • Experience working successfully with issues of substance abuse, mental health, criminal background, and other potential barriers to economic self sufficiency. 
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word Outlook and internet applications. 
  • Integrity to handle sensitive information in a confidential manner. 


  • Knowledge of Medi-Cal billing practices and requirements. 
  • Knowledge of community resources for non-profit substance abuse treatment facilities. 
  • Experience with government contracts and compliance. 
  • Knowledge of co-occurring disorders and trauma informed treatment.  
  • Experience working with criminal justice population.

  • Fluent in SF threshold languages. 
  • Skilled in clinical documentation (treatment plans, progress notes etc.).

Compensation: $90,000.00-$95,000.00
