For clients with co-occurring mental illness and criminal background we provide integrated substance use and mental health services which treat both conditions as primary.

The SUD counselor provides program coverage in outpatient and field-based settings (across Los Angeles area) for underserved and vulnerable populations including co-occurring disorders, homelessness and criminal justice. The services are included, but not limited: intake and assessment, individual and group counseling, psycho-education, relapse prevention, harm reduction, crisis intervention and case management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial assessment and intake evaluation for the formulation of treatment plan; provide group, family and individual counseling
  • Provide case management services (e.g. housing, employment, finances management, court reports, DCFS communication)
  • Identify and implement relapse prevention or harm reduction interventions when indicated
  • Work as part of the treatment team in collaboration with the prescribing provides, therapist and other team members
  • Participate in team meetings to provide information and make recommendations for treatment, discharge planning, and client management. 
  • Document client's progress and reviews treatment plans routinely 
  • Ensure that all documentation is of high quality and is completed within assigned deadlines 
  • Continue professional development through participation in continuing education, in-service training and professional workshops to maintain current knowledge and broaden expertise

Education and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor
  • At least 1 year of experience working in the substance abuse treatment field 
  • Experience in culturally diverse substance abuse populations with co-occurring mental health diagnosis or criminal charges are desired
  • Excellent writing and computer skills
  • Experience with motivational interviewing and CBT
  • Must be open to a flexible work schedule including evening and/or weekends
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work effectively with people in a constructive manner within a community-based treatment setting 
  • Must be able to demonstrate strong boundaries
  • CPR and First Aid Certification required within first 90 days of employment 
  • Valid Drives' license, registration and insurance required 

Bi-Lingual (English/Spanish) preferred

Compensation: $17.00-$24.00
