Haight Ashbury Free Clinic offers primary medical, dental, substance use disorder treatment, and mental health services guided by the principle that "Healthcare is a Right, Not a Privilege."

Haight Ashbury Free Clinic provides compassionate, nonjudgmental care. Our supportive staff is experienced with the complex healthcare needs that can result from homelessness, poverty, and addiction. Our providers have specialized expertise in preventative health, chronic conditions, the treatment of infectious disease, and addiction.


  • Evaluation and treatment of medical issues
  • Integrated primary care and behavioral health services
  • Dental services for adults (children on Saturdays) 
  • Follow-up of chronic and ongoing medical problems
  • Routine checkups
  • Screening for many health disorders and chronic disease management, such as diabetes (high blood sugar), high blood pressure, high cholesterol, anemia, hepatitis, and cancers
  • Women's health care services, including family planning, pregnancy test, complete obstetrical services, breast exams, mammogram referrals, and cervical cancer screenings
  • Geriatric health care services
  • Behavioral health services (individual and group therapy)
  • Psychiatric Services 
  • Confidential HIV and Hepatitis C testing, counseling, and treatment
  • Substance use services, including Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)
  • Tobacco cessation treatment
  • TB screenings and treatment
  • In-house phlebotomy
  • Food Pharmacy 
  • Case management, housing resources, and employment services 
  • On-site charter school to earn a high school diploma or GED 
  • Acupuncture 
  • Nutrition counseling

When Dr. David Smith opened Haight Ashbury Free Clinic in 1967, it was the first nonsectarian free medical clinic in the United States. Over 400 patients were seen in its first week of operation, launching decades of innovation for delivering primary healthcare services to those who can least afford them.

Haight Ashbury Free Clinics was there for me when I did not have medical insurance. I was out of work and came down with pneumonia. I am still a loyal patient to the clinic and want to say thank you for all they have done for me!
